East/Gulf Coast Port Labor Contract Negotiations Still on Hold

As noted previously, negotiations broke down in December between the International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA) and the U.S. Maritime Alliance (USMX) to extend the current port labor contract at East and Gulf coast ports for another five years. The negotiations reportedly broke down over the definition of automation, with ILA President Harold Daggett accusing the employers of using automation to eliminate dockworker jobs. It was rumored that the two sides would come together to make an announcement by early March, but talks remain on hold. The breakdown occurs as ports all along the East and Gulf coasts are reporting record growth and growing market share thanks to the Panama Canal expansion and significant port improvement investments. The current East/Gulf Coast port labor contract expires September 30, 2018.
