Luggage America, Inc.
Chris Yu opened Luggage America’s first office in Los Angeles, CA, in 1982 as a one-man travel shop. Over the next two decades, Yu focused on his vision of offering consumers a wide range of dependable, moderately priced, and quality products, helping the company evolve into an international travel goods supplier. Now headquartered in Carson, CA, a Los Angeles suburb, Luggage America opened an East Coast distribution center in South Hackensack, NJ, in 1998 so that it could better serve the domestic market. The company also established itself in the global market by opening sales and research and development offices in Shanghai, China. Today, Yu devotes most of his time to product development and quality control. “The drive for innovative products and features is what keeps us moving forward,” he says.
Luggage America provides items in a multitude of categories, such as rolling backpacks, duffels, totes, casual bags, and luggage. According to Yu, “New products and ideas are tested and quickly introduced in order to meet the ever-changing landscape of modern travel.” The U.S. patented 2×2 recess in-line metal ball bearing wheel system has become a company trademark, while the introduction of the next generation Hideaway Backpack Strap System has helped to further distinguish Luggage America’s Sports Plus rolling backpack from the competition. As National Sales Manager Henry Kim points out, “Whether it’s a Sports Plus rolling duffel, an Olympia rolling business case, or an American Airlines luggage collection, Luggage America’s original features provide the customer with a unique travel solution.”
