Founded in 1975 by entrepreneur Charlie Clifford, Tumi took its unique name from a Peruvian god Clifford learned about during time spent with the American Peace Corps in South America. During the 1980’s Tumi began focusing on soft, black-on-black ballistic nylon travel bags, which allowed the company to slowly develop a following among affluent business and leisure travelers.
